Limo Crash in Upstate New York | 20 Feared Dead
A 2-vehicle accident involving a limousine has left 20 deceased in upstate New York, the State of New York Police said on Sunday. Federal investigators were rushing to the scene.
Local reports said the limousine was carrying a marriage party when it struck with another vehicle in front of the Apple Barrel Country Store in Schoharie, N.Y., on Saturday afternoon.
Jessica Kirby, 36, the manager of the Apple Barrel Country Store, said multiple regulars in the parking lot were killed when they were hit by the speeding limousine as it raced down the hill on Route 30.
“All fatal,” she said in a telephone interview. “That limo was approaching downhill probably over 60 mph.”
She said she did not see the individuals inside the limousine and she could not recognize the make or model of the other vehicle involved because it was “tangled.”
The Schoharie County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police responded to the accident, which happened just before 2 p.m. on Saturday at the juncture of State Route 30 and State Route 30A, as per the police.
The State Police said in a announcement that “the names of the dead are not being released at this time as next of kin are being informed.”
The (NTSB) National Transportation Safety Board is dispatching a team to examine, which a spokesman said would be on the ground and will get to work by early Sunday afternoon.
Ms. Kirby said that Columbus Day weekend is the fullest weekend of the year for the store, and that it was crammed. Most of her clients had come in from New York City, New Jersey or Albany, she said.
Ms. Kirby informed that she was inside the store when she heard the loud crash. She rushed out instantly and called 911 when she saw what had happened.
